If you ask someone to tell you who the alpha male of Bold and the Beautiful is, chances are they’ll tell you it’s Ridge Forrester. And why not? He’s the CEO of Forrester, has been vacillating between two beautiful women for years, and generally runs the show.

Or does he? There’s a new alpha male in town (well, I say ‘new’ - he’s been around for a while) and his name is Bill Spencer. The younger brother of Ridge’s first wife Caroline and head honcho of Spencer Publications, he’s married to Brooke’s sister Katie and at one time managed to buy Forrester Creations for her basically as a toy. He’s easily the richest character on the show, probably one of the most ruthless, and seems to favour very bizarre shirts with weird button spacing and outlandish lining.

As in Highlander, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE. Alpha male, that is, and if someone asked my opinion on who it was, I’d probably have to say Bill. There’s no way that Ridge would ever be able to yank the carpet out from under Bill at Spencer like Bill did to Ridge at Forrester. The only reason that the Forresters got their company back from Bill was because Steffy essentially seduced him and stole Katie’s engagement ring.

And therein we have Bill’s Achilles heel: Ridge’s daughter Steffy, who Bill is obviously going to get together properly with one day after the couple of abortive affairs they’ve already had. If you leave out all the corporate shenanigans, then this is one very big point of tension between Ridge and Bill, and yet the only thing they have in common is that they think she’s awesome.

As people who’ve been watching the show recently will know, Steffy, fresh from getting her heart broken by Bill again, went straight into the arms of his scruffy, eternally surprised son Liam. This was a saga, because Steffy had to whisk him out from under Brooke’s daughter Hope, and she needed Bill’s help to do it, and it was all a big thing. Bill obviously supports the Steffy/Liam thing because he wants to keep it in the family, which is more than a little creepy. Ridge is on board because, you know, he wants Steffy to be happy, despite the fact that Brooke and Bill’s wife Katie are hardcore supporters of Liam/Hope. (What, this doesn’t happen in your life? I hear it’s terribly common.)

Basically, Ridge and Bill are the only two people in the Bold-verse now that ship Liam/Steffy, and I, for one, would like to see this uneasy alliance cemented. Maybe Ridge and Bill could get really drunk one night and bond over their mutual love of scotch and Steffiam. Ridge could confess that he actually secretly likes Bill’s crazy shirts and Bill could tearfully admit he’s jealous of Ridge’s mullet. It would be a BEAUTIFUL THING, I tell you. A beautiful thing.
